Hear the Dance
Arsht Center 2014-15
Hear the Dance
Our second program of the season brings to life George Balanchine's famous words "see the music, hear the dance.”

Ballet meets ballroom in Twyla Tharp's popular work, Nine Sinatra Songs, featuring glamorous costuming by Oscar de la Renta and Great American Songbook classics by Ol' Blue Eyes.

The symphonic works of Schubert are imbued with Paul Taylor's excitement and athleticism in Mercuric Tidings, a work in which Taylor said the "music and dance are so closely entwined, that they are one.”

George Balanchine's exultant "miracle ballet,” Symphony in Three Movements, contains some of the most dynamic and complex patterns found in dance set to Stravinsky's driving, jazz-flavored score.

NINE SINATRA SONGS  Tharp/Arlen, Mercer, Cahn, Van Heusen, et al.
MERCURIC TIDINGS  Taylor/Schubert
SYMPHONY IN THREE MOVEMENTS  Balanchine/Stravinsky

Passion and Grace
Arsht Center 2014-15
Passion and Grace
Miami City Ballet proudly presents the American premiere of Richard Alston's critically-acclaimed Carmen – a flamenco-fueled, modernist take on the classic tale of passion and betrayal by one of today's most important choreographic voices.

The 18th-century hymns and egalitarian beliefs of the Shakers were Twyla Tharp's inspiration for Sweet Fields – a joyous, ethereal celebration of innocence and simplicity.

George Balanchine's dazzling Allegro Brillante is a testament to the beauty, strength and grace of the human spirit, set to a vigorous Tchaikovsky score. As Balanchine once said, "it contains everything I know about classical ballet in thirteen minutes."

Points of Departure
Kravis Center 2014-15
Points of Departure
Our final program of the season, Points of Departure celebrates choreographers taking ballet in new, unexpected directions.

In the creation of his masterwork Raymonda Variations, George Balanchine cast aside the original ballet's complicated plotlines, bringing the joyous dancing centerstage in unison with Glazunov's magnificent score.

Jerome Robbins' The Concert (Or, The Perils of Everybody) is one of the great comic ballets, a surprising and lighthearted exploration of human relationships – and the tricks the mind can play while enjoying the simple joys of a Chopin sonata.

In an unprecedented world premiere, ballet and guerilla "street art” collide as choreographer Justin Peck and visual artist Shepard Fairey join forces for an entirely new exploration of movement, music, and design.
